INEC declares Emeka Ihedioha winner of Imo governorship election



Candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) in the Imo State governorship election, Mr Emeka Ihedioha, has emerged governor-elect of the state. Ihedioha, a former Deputy Speaker of the House of Assembly, secured 273,404 votes to defeat defeated Uche Nwosu of the Action Alliance (AA) and Senator Hope Uzodinma of the All Progressives Congress (APC).

Nwosu, who was backed by Governor Rochas Okorocha, finished second with 190,364 votes; followed by Senator Uzodinma who got 96,458 votes. Ihedioha was declared winner Returning Officer for the election, Professor Francis Ogbonnaya Otunta at 11:57 pm on Monday night.

The Ugwumba Uche Nwosu Campaign Organization had called on Independent National Electoral Commission to set down a schedule for the conduct of a run-off election between His Excellency Ugwumba Uche Nwosu and Chief Emeka Ihedioha. A statement Signed by Onwuasoanya FCC Jones. Director, Media and Publicity, Ugwumba Uche Nwosu Campaign Organization and dated 11th March, 2019, stated that the Independent National Electoral Commission having concluded collation of results from the 27 LGAs of the State, found out that the PDP and its candidate did not meet the Constitutional requirement to be declared winner of this election.

The AA governorship candidate said Chief Emeka Ihedioha did not score up to 25% up 18 LGAs of the State as required by the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria, which requires a governorship candidate to win 25% of votes in two thirds of his or her State, apart from winning the highest number of votes, before he or she can be returned, elected. “The Independent National Electoral Commission shall, in obedience to the Nigerian Constitution, conduct a run-off between Chief Emeka Ihedioha and Ugwumba Uche Nwosu, within the next seven days, in order to determine the actual winner of the election”, Ugwumba Nwosu said.
